Poker tilt I
Often in poker games, a situation may arise when a player may start playing over-aggressively, resulting from confusion and frustration at the way the game has unfolded. While this form of play may turn out to be beneficial in some cases, mostly this less than optimal approach to the game turns out to be risky for the player.
It is an essential aspect of poker games to deal with the situation when a player finds himself on tilt and a strategy often used by veteran poker players is to induce the opponent into a position of tilt. The frequency of tilt in poker games takes place due to disappointment, fierce and relentless competition against other players and also due to continuous bad luck. Only unskilled poker players would allow themselves to be carried away when on tilt by not recognizing their situation and playing impulsively and rashly and ending up losing heavily. On the contrary, all experienced poker players make it a rule to recognize if he is going through a tilt situation and tries to neutralize it by not allowing it to affect his gameplay and tactics.
It is interesting to note how the term ‘tilt’ founds its place in poker game situation and it has been observed that it refers to the tilting of a pinball device. Someone who sees the ball going towards the gap between the flippers can get frustrated and in extremely agitated state of mind manually tilt the device so that the ball can move towards the flippers. Now if a player acts like this, some games will flash the word ‘tilt’ and the flippers would be taken out of play by freezing them and the pinball would get lost. This disadvantageous and damaging gameplay that results due to over-aggression caused by frustration of the game situation is the reason why the term ‘tilt’ is used in similar condition in a poker game.
